What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation or low-level light therapy, is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular function and support healing throughout the body.

Red light therapy is believed to stimulate mitochondria to reduce inflammation and boost the production of collagen, a structural protein that makes skin stronger and more supple. At the cellular level, the absorption of red light energy enhances mitochondrial ATP production, cell signaling, growth factor synthesis, and the reduction of oxidative stress. These effects make it relevant not just for skin health, but for muscle recovery, joint comfort, wound healing, and circadian rhythm support—all of which contribute to healthy aging.

Red light therapy is available in professional clinical settings as well as through FDA-cleared at-home devices, including panels, wands, and facial masks. Consistency matters when using red light tools for skin care. Results build gradually with regular use over weeks to months. As with any wellness tool, it works best as part of a layered approach to health that includes nutrient-dense nourishment, restorative sleep, stress reduction, and energetic care for the whole self.
