What Is Seed Cycling?

Seed cycling is a food-based practice that uses specific seeds at different phases of the menstrual cycle to provide key nutrients that support the body’s natural hormone production and metabolism. It’s a simple, accessible expression of cyclical living, the principle that women’s bodies have distinct nutritional needs at different times of the month, and that honoring those rhythms can meaningfully support hormonal health.

The practice divides the cycle into two phases. During the follicular phase (roughly days 1 through 14), flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds are consumed daily. Flaxseeds are rich in lignans, plant compounds that support estrogen metabolism, while pumpkin seeds provide zinc, which supports ovulation and the transition into the next phase. During the luteal phase (days 15 through 28), sesame seeds and sunflower seeds take over. Sesame seeds supply selenium and lignans that support progesterone production, while sunflower seeds provide vitamin E, which helps reduce inflammation and ease PMS symptoms.

Seed cycling is not a replacement for medical care, but it is a nourishing, low-risk way to bring intentional nutrition to the hormonal cycle—one that works synergistically with the gut microbiome, which plays its own pivotal role in estrogen metabolism and overall hormonal balance.
