What Is Cold Plunge and Sauna Therapy?

Cold plunge and sauna are thermal therapies that use deliberate exposure to extreme cold and heat to trigger beneficial biological adaptations through a process known as hormesis, where brief, controlled stress signals the body to activate its own repair and defense systems.

When the body is exposed to the intense heat of a sauna, heart rate rises, blood vessels dilate, and heat shock proteins are produced to protect against oxidative stress and cellular damage. Regular sauna use has been shown to reduce inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein and increase anti-inflammatory cytokines, with benefits spanning cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and longevity.

Cold water immersion works through a complementary mechanism: vasoconstriction, nervous system activation, and a surge of norepinephrine that supports mood, focus, and metabolic resilience. Cold water therapy induces mild oxidative stress that leads to adaptive changes conferring antioxidant protection, enhancing the body’s readiness to manage disease.

When practiced together as contrast therapy, the alternating expansion and contraction of blood vessels trains the vascular system, improving circulation and recovery. These practices are not one-size-fits-all, however. From a cyclical health perspective, extreme cold may not be appropriate for women at all points in their hormonal cycle, and individual constitution and health history should always guide their use. Used thoughtfully, cold plunge and sauna are powerful additions to a longevity practice, putting the body into the kind of intentional, temporary adversity that reminds it how to come back stronger.
