What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics are live, beneficial microbes that help keep your gut ecosystem diverse, resilient, and calm. Gut health matters because your microbiome influences digestion, nutrient absorption, immune signaling, inflammation, and even mood through the gut–brain axis (yes, your belly and your brain are in constant conversation).

Stress, ultra-processed foods, travel, antibiotics, or low fiber can throw this balance off. When that happens, you may notice bloating, reflux, irregularity, and food sensitivities. Probiotics (which you can find in yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut) work best when paired with prebiotics (plant fibers that feed the good bacteria). This is so they can produce supportive compounds like short-chain fatty acids.

While gut support supplements can be helpful, gut health is built on daily rhythms. Eating a diverse, fiber-rich diet, staying hydrated, chewing mindfully, and managing stress all help regulate digestion and support the gut–brain connection through pathways like the vagus nerve. When your foundation is strong, probiotics have a healthier environment to thrive.
