Hydration is one of the biggest principles in my philosophy for optimal whole-body wellness and health. Of all of the benefits of staying hydrated, one of my favorites is that it helps you meet your beauty goals.
One of the health benefits of drinking water is that it gives your skin a natural, youthful, dewy glow. This can be created temporarily with great makeup, but I’m sure you agree that it’s 10 times better when you look that way makeup-free.
If you’re preparing for a memorable moment in your life such as a wedding, graduation, or birthday, you’ll want to have this special glow all day and all night long. How can you make sure you’re staying hydrated enough in the days leading up to your big day? Here are some of the best ways to hydrate for beautiful, healthy skin.
1. Create hydration goals
Everyone seems to know the importance of drinking water, but few actually follow through with staying hydrated enough. This may be partly because people aren’t exactly sure how much water their individual bodies need.
My advice to clients is to try to drink at least one ounce of water daily for every pound they weigh. Ideally, you can add another liter on top of that. Be careful not to overwhelm yourself with a goal that’s too lofty. It’s better to start small and slowly build up to your ultimate goal so that you don’t get discouraged.
2. Get ready to meet your new BFF
The best way to stay hydrated is to start carrying a large water bottle with you everywhere you go. It needs to be able to hold at least 32 ounces. Pick out a cute bottle that you won’t mind having with you, as this will become your sidekick and BFF for the days leading up to your big day and beyond.
Convenience helps to create habits, so if the water is right in front of you all the time, it’s much easier to remember to drink it. You’ll probably get to the point where you’re reaching for your water bottle without even thinking about it.
3. Mix up the flavor
Do you get tired of drinking just plain water all the time? There are lots of different things you can add to your water to give it a nice flavor without sacrificing the hydrating powers of the water.
Keep prepped fresh lemons, cucumber, orange slices, berries, and mint in your fridge so you can easily choose something to add to your water each morning before you leave. The more variety, the better.
4. Set reminders
Until you develop the habit of drinking water constantly, you might find it tough to remember to drink enough. Particularly on busy days, you might climb into bed at night and suddenly realize you didn’t drink nearly enough water that day.
Set an alarm on your phone or computer to go off every 30 to 45 minutes to remind you to take a swig of water. This is a good rhythm in general because it allows you to take a quick break from whatever you’re doing so you can return with more focus.
5. Start this soothing morning ritual
Make a point to start your day every morning with a cup of warm lemon water. You’ll wake up your body, your mind, and your taste buds with this calming, gentle flavor.
As you detox from the night before, you’ll also lessen your unhealthy cravings with this drink. Before you know it, you’ll start looking forward to this relaxing part of your morning routine.
6. Double your order
Whenever you’re eating at a restaurant, order two glasses of water instead of just one. It will help remind you (and those closest to you) that you need to be drinking a little more water leading up to the big day.
With your two glasses of water, you’ll be able to pace yourself as you eat to make sure you finish both glasses. As a bonus, drinking more water helps to fill your stomach so you don’t overeat. Enjoy your leftovers the next day!
7. Eat some hydrating fruits
Who said that drinking liquids is the only way to stay hydrated? For a little extra mileage towards your daily hydration goal, add some water-dense fruits like watermelon and pineapples to your diet.
If you’re more of a veggie person, you may prefer some crunchy cucumbers or celery. Don’t let any of these fruits or vegetables become replacements for drinking enough water, but feel free to enjoy them as a hydrating, skin-friendly snack.
8. Enjoy coco water
Are you a fan of coconut water? It’s great to make this delicious drink part of your daily water intake as long as you add some plain water to the coconut water.
My recommendation is to thin out your coco water by mixing a drink that’s 2/3 parts coconut water and 1/3 parts water. A drink that’s half and half is even more hydrating. Enjoy this little boost of flavor as you work towards your hydration goals!
9. Splurge on the good stuff
Rather than settling for tap water, choose high-quality water that tastes great. It will be much easier to stick to your hydration goals if each sip of water is delicious.
My go-to H2O is alkaline natural mountain spring water. If this is too pricey or too hard to find, buy a water filter for your tap water so that it can be as pure as possible or buy the vitajuwel water bottle.
Never forget the importance of drinking water. You’ll be amazed at how much your skin glows when it’s properly hydrated!
