I’ve always been curious about the science behind what makes us feel better, especially after a detox. Following a plant-based diet, intermittent fasting, and good hydration are a strong start.

But I like to go deeper with my clients for the simple reason that food alone can’t touch the complex, cumulative, and more hidden toxins that we are exposed to. We’re not just dealing with surface-level imbalances or dietary disruptions.

Did you know that toxins can infiltrate how our DNA directs our genes, hijack our cellular metabolism, break our sleep cycles, and generally block our body’s ability to repair itself?

Fasting and clean eating support the body, yes, but they don’t fully address mitochondrial stagnation, epigenetic inflammation, electromagnetic overload, or energetic blockages that keep us stuck in low-frequency patterns.

That’s why a new, layered detoxification approach, one that includes cellular signaling, energy field clearing, and cleansing your home environment, is essential for living your best life.

The Science of Cellular Detox

Every cell in your body is constantly regenerating. But how and whether it regenerates in a healthy way depends on your internal and external environment.

Epigenetic Modulation

In the past, scientists thought genes were fixed, but now we know they can be turned on and off. Our environment, thoughts, emotions, food, and even relationships influence which genes are expressed, or turned on.

This is epigenetics, the study of how the top (“epi”) layer of genetic material (DNA) interacts with the DNA below, not changing the genetic makeup but activating or deactivating it.

What we eat, how much we exercise and sleep, and how we manage stress can:

  • Activate genes that promote healing, detoxification, and longevity
  • Suppress genes associated with inflammation, degeneration, and disease

By reducing our toxic burden through these lifestyle choices, we allow the epigenetic “switchboard” to return to a state of clarity and repair (1).

Mitochondria

Mitochondria are the engines of your cells, responsible not only for energy production (ATP), but also for:

  • Cell signaling, where cells communicate with themselves and the environment
  • Immune response to illness
  • Metabolic balance, for example, not over or under nourishing your body
  • Autophagy, or, the cellular clean-up process (2)

When your mitochondria are overwhelmed by toxins, oxidative stress (an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants), or EMF (electromagnetic field) interference, detoxification grinds to a halt (3).

Here’s where hormesis comes in.

Hormesis and Ozone Therapy

Hormesis is the process by which a low-dose stressor triggers a regenerative, or healing, response. Think of it like a vaccine for your mitochondria. It’s a controlled challenge that strengthens your system. Some examples of this are fasting, cold exposure and ozone therapy (4).

Nikola Tesla, a Serbian-American inventor and engineer, was very much interested in magnetic fields, among other things. He was among the first to experiment with ozone (O₃) as a healing tool, inventing one of the earliest ozone generators in the 1890s. He understood that ozone, an activated, three-oxygen molecule form, had purifying and regenerative properties (5).

Today, ozone therapy is used in functional medicine through methods such as:

  • Autohemotherapy, also called autologous blood therapy, involves drawing a patient’s blood, infusing it with ozone, and reintroducing it back into the patient’s body.
  • Ozonated oils, generally taken orally to heal infection
  • Topical ozone for wound healing applied directly to the skin

What makes ozone unique is that it delivers a short burst of oxidative stress, prompting the body’s detox pathways to switch on. As a powerful hormetic agent, ozone introduces the extra oxygen molecule, which then pairs with electron-seeking (and potentially damaging) free radicals. This also knocks out pathogens like viruses, mycotoxins and parasites.

Ozone improves blood oxygen utilization (VO2 max), allowing tissues to heal more efficiently, and mitochondrial output, which is critical for energy and detoxification. Production of antioxidant enzymes like glutathione and catalase is also amped up (6).

These proteins play an important role in protecting cells from damaging free radicals. And immune surveillance is heightened, where the immune system is monitoring the body for abnormal or foreign cells.

Used in safe, measured doses, ozone is one of the most advanced tools we have to restore the body’s self-healing intelligence.

Sacred Alignment

Just as essential as addressing a cellular reset is seeking sacred energy where it lives in the world so that we can realign with it. The first step is becoming open and aware of its existence. One example is the Divine Feminine, which is a universal archetype of energy that is not actually gendered and represents intuition, nurturing, flow, regeneration, receptivity and embodiment, which are principles we all share.

It is the opposite of extraction, force, and linear thinking—toxic traits that we can find everywhere in our world today.

Mary Magdalene, whose role in history is widely debated among scholars, is one of the most powerful representations of the Divine Feminine in spiritual tradition. Long revered in Gnostic and esoteric Christian texts, she was known not as a sinner, but as a healer, mystic, and spiritual equal to Jesus (7)

I’m just skimming the surface of her story but I recently journeyed to the grotto in Sainte-Baume, France, where her presence was palpable to me. Many believe she spent her final years in meditation. These grottos (there’s more than one) and forests are charged with the frequency of grace, transmutation, and energetic healing, and I went because I knew that others had visited them for spiritual renewal, which is what I sought.

To detox in the deepest sense is to embrace the Divine Feminine within us, to slow down, to listen, to allow, to nourish, and to reconnect with our own inner sanctuary.

Home Detox

Detoxing your space is just as important as aligning your spiritual energy, and is a bit more immediate.

Your home can be a recharging station and a source of invisible stress. To detox in a meaningful way, we first address energetic hygienegrounding daily, turning off Wi-Fi, bluetooth devices, and cell phones at night, limiting device exposure, and using technologies that block electromagnetic fields when possible. These can disrupt melatonin production and sleep, interfere with cell repair and add to oxidative stress and inflammation (8)

Start with a physical detox. A few things to do right away include:

  • Swap chemical cleaners for essential oil-based products
  • Avoid synthetic air fresheners, candles, and dryer sheets
  • Use natural materials (wood, wool, glass) whenever possible
  • Open windows daily to release the old air and welcome in the new

To begin an energetic detox of your home:

  • Burn sage, palo santo, or resin (like frankincense) to clear old energy
  • Use Reiki symbols, mantras, or sound bowls to realign frequency
  • Set boundaries in your home. Say, “This space is for healing, peace, and restoration.”

Detoxing on so many levels goes well beyond clean eating. It represents a new approach where science, spirit, and soul work together. This paradigm isn’t just about removal, but about reunion with our original vitality.

To support this process, tend to your mitochondria, align your epigenetics, explore ozone treatment, open your mind to reconnection with the sacred feminine frequency that restores all things. Knowing is doing, so clear your space, nurture your body and mind, and make a pathway for healing light to enter.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What’s the difference between detoxing and cleansing?

A: While the terms are often used interchangeably, cleansing typically refers to a short-term dietary reset—like eliminating sugar, alcohol, or processed foods. Detoxification, on the other hand, is a deeper, multi-system process that involves cellular repair, mitochondrial activation, lymphatic flow, and emotional clearing. True detox also includes addressing energetic stagnation and environmental toxins, not just diet.

Q: How do I know if my mitochondria are sluggish or underperforming?

A: Signs include:

  • Persistent fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Poor stress tolerance
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Low mood or lack of motivation

Mitochondrial dysfunction can also contribute to chronic inflammation and premature aging. Advanced detox protocols like ozone therapy and mitochondrial support can help restore vitality at the root.

Q: What is EMF saturation, and why is it harmful?

A: EMF (electromagnetic frequency) saturation refers to constant exposure to wireless signals and frequencies—from Wi-Fi, phones, 5G towers, smart appliances, etc. While invisible, these fields can interfere with cellular communication, disrupt sleep, and increase oxidative stress in sensitive individuals.

Some protective steps:

  • Turn off your Wi-Fi router at night
  • Don’t sleep with your phone near your bed
  • Use grounding mats or EMF-reducing fabrics
  • Spend time in nature to “discharge” and recalibrate

Q: Can Reiki or energy healing really help with detoxification?

A: Yes. While it’s not a substitute for physical detox pathways, energy work like Reiki helps clear emotional, mental, and energetic blockages that contribute to stagnation and toxicity. Reiki can also:

  • Support lymphatic and parasympathetic activation
  • Ease the emotional detox process
  • Restore harmony to the body’s natural healing rhythms

Think of it as clearing the energetic debris that often holds physical toxicity in place.

Q: What are ozonides, and how do they help with detox?

A: Ozonides are reactive oxygen species created when ozone (O₃) is infused into oils or introduced into the body. These ozonides act as a controlled oxidative signal that stimulates:

  • Cellular clean-up (autophagy)
  • Antioxidant defenses
  • Mitochondrial biogenesis
  • Immune activation

They produce a hormetic effect, meaning they challenge the body just enough to prompt a regenerative, adaptive response.

Q: Where does the Divine Feminine archetype originate?

A: The Divine Feminine has ancient roots across many spiritual traditions, often associated with earth, intuition, compassion, and creation. Goddesses like Isis, Quan Yin, Shakti, and Sophia all embody facets of this energy.

In Christian mysticism, Mary Magdalene is seen as a representation of the Divine Feminine. Her legacy—especially in Gnostic texts—portrays her as a powerful healer, mystic, and teacher of sacred knowledge. Her presence in Southern France (notably in the caves of Sainte-Baume) is still considered sacred ground for spiritual seekers today.

Q: Is ozone therapy safe? Are there any contraindications?

A: When administered properly by a trained practitioner, ozone therapy is considered safe and well-tolerated. However, it’s not recommended for:

  • People with hyperthyroidism
  • Those with bleeding disorders or certain cardiovascular issues
  • Pregnant individuals

Always consult a functional or integrative provider familiar with ozone therapy before starting.

Q: What’s the best place to start if I’m new to this type of healing?

A: Start where you are. Begin by:

  • Cleansing your space (physical and energetic)
  • Supporting your gut and mitochondria with clean food and rest
  • Exploring practices like meditation, Reiki, or sound healing
  • Reducing your EMF exposure

Consider trying ozonated oil (like Resistor by Biocharged) or seeking out a functional practitioner for deeper detox tools. Healing is a path of remembrance—and every step is sacred.
